Creative Handmade Soap Packaging - A Competitive Advantage

!±8± Creative Handmade Soap Packaging - A Competitive Advantage

Why is handmade soap packaging important? With a lot of competition from other homemade soap makers and commercial producers, packaging is important to be able to attract people to buy your products. Remember that the soaps you make are more expensive than the commercial ones. The difference in cost lies in the extra effort, dedication, time and skill that you have put into making your handmade soaps which are the very reason why your clients buy your products. The best way to get an advantage over the competition is by using creative packaging.

There are a lot of ways of packaging your soaps, from the simple to the stylish, from rustic to the modern and even from the conventional to the futuristic. Whatever way you choose to package your handmade soaps, it is still how much time, care and effort you want to put into it that will matter.

Here are some packaging ideas that you can work on according to what impression you would like to convey to your clientele:

    1.      For easy wrapping, you can use colored Japanese paper. However you should first wrap your soap in plain white paper because colored Japanese paper tends to taint the item especially when there is moisture. What you can also do is to use the same color of paper and soap to avoid any discoloration.

    2.      You can use various wrapping papers with several designs to choose from or you can even design your own for that unique effect.

    3.      You can use plain white paper and you can just stamp it with your logo or design.   Have a customized stamp made which you can use anywhere.

    4.      You can use materials like scraps of cloth like tulle or organza or some indigenous material you may find.

    5.      You can also use cardboard boxes you made yourself or corrugated cardboard can be used also.

    6.      When wrapping or packaging your soap, you can wrap the entire soap or you can just use a strip of packaging and place it in the middle of the soap bar. You can also wrap half of the soap with the other half exposed.

    7.      It is also important to decorate your soap packages with twine, ribbons, lace or strings.

    8.      You can also design your own tags instead of plain price tags for your soaps and attach it with a twine, ribbon or string.

    9.      You can also use your business card as a tag, design it in such a way that you can fold it in half making it look like a mini card. It will serve a dual purpose as business card and tag for your handmade soaps.

10.You can also have gift bags made using inexpensive but colorful cloth which can be reused by your customers. You can even embellish it with beads, plastic trinkets or charms.

Having a unique packaging for your handmade soap will make your products standout and will also show the effort and care you put into each item. A unique and eye-catching packaging will definitely have an edge over the competition.

Start a Handmade Soap Business - It's Easier Than You Think

!±8± Start a Handmade Soap Business - It's Easier Than You Think

The business of handmade soap is one that is ideal for the
stay at home mom. In this business, and with a good
recipe and the right ingredients, you can spend a few hours
in the kitchen and come up with products that are potentially
worth hundreds of dollars. People love handmade soap for
many reasons. Handmade soap is considered a luxury
when compared to cheap, mass produced soap. Many
people like buying things that are handmade. Handmade
soap makes an inexpensive gift. Last, but not least,
handmade soap provides the consumer with an
    inexpensive pampering treat.

There are basically two approaches to making handmade
soap. Some crafters prefer to buy premade soap bases
and customize these by adding fragrances, colors, herbs,
and other special ingredients. This is the quick way to start
making soap. The disadvantage with this approach is that
premade bases can be somewhat expensive, and you are
not in control of the ingredients that are used in the base.
But for some this approach is the best way because of its
ease. Soap made from a premade base can be ready to
sell in less than 24 hours after it has been melted down and
    poured into molds.

The other approach is to make your soap from scratch. This
is the approach I prefer because it is more cost effective
than buying premade bases. It also gives you complete
control over the ingredients that you use in your products.
However, this approach is a little more time consuming than
making soap from a premade base. Soap made from
scratch must be cured (allowed to air dry) before it can be
used on the skin. This takes about four weeks. However,
when it is ready to use you will have an all natural soap that
is very popular in today's world. More and more consumers
are seeking products made from natural ingredients.
Making soap from scratch will allow you to offer them just
    that.

Whether you make soap from a premade base or from
scratch you will have to do some homework. If you make
soap from a base you should do some research to find a
base that has ingredients you are comfortable with and that
produces a bar of soap you like. If you make soap from
scratch you will need to try out different recipes or possibly
develop your own after you learn how to make soap. Most
soapmakers start out with one or two recipes they like and
refine their techniques and recipes as time goes on.

In the United States you need to be aware of what the
government requires of sellers. As long as you are not
making any claims about your soap other
than saying it cleanses the body, you do not have to follow
the Food and Drug Administration's requirements for
labeling cosmetics. However, if you give any cosmetic claim
to your soap, it is defined as a cosmetic, and has to be
labeled as such. For information about the Food and Drug
    Administration visit http://www.FDA.gov

    Natural Colorants For Handmade Soap

!±8± Natural Colorants For Handmade Soap

As a soapmaker, you'll notice that many soaps will naturally turn out different colors. For example, whenever I've added honey to soap, the soap has turned honey-colored. If it is important to you, like it is to me, that your soap is 100% all-natural, you'll be disappointed with many of the available soap dyes. Why? Because they contain the same chemicals used to color commercial soaps-namely FD&C colors (FD&C stands for Food, Drugs, and Cosmetics). These are also the ingredients used in food coloring. Some of the known side effects of FD&C colorants include:

FD&C Red #40 causes lymphomas and tumors  FD&C Yellow #5 (used in Dial soap) causes allergies, thyroid tumors, lymphomas, chromosomal damage, triggers asthma, hives, and hyperactivity  FD&C Yellow #6 causes hives, runny nose, nasal congestion, bronchial constriction, anaphylactic reaction, bruising, allergies, and kidney tumors.   FD&C Green #3 (used in Irish Spring soap) causes bladder tumors   FD&C Blue #2 causes brain tumors

The only color-true natural soap dyesout there are annatto seed (orange), alkanet root (magenta), ratanjot (purple), spirullina, seaweed/kelp (all green), vanilla extract, coffee, cocoa powder (all deep brown), red and/or white wine (both make soap pink), carrot juice (orange), pureed cucumber (green), and tomato (peach). These colorants definitely hold up in handmilling and may stand up in cold processing. I also know for sure that beets (reddish-pink) do not work in coloring soap whether used in cold-processing or handmilling. Turmeric (bright yellow) and paprika (orange) can also be used to dye soap with pretty good results.

The only natural soap dyes that I know of made commercially are available from TKB Trading, Cranberry Lane, and Sun Feather Natural Soap Co. TKB Trading offers oil-based natural dyes: oil-based blue (from blue gardenia flowers), oil-based green (from chlorophyll--the stuff that causes grass stains), oil-based red (from beetles or "carmine"--this one is not vegan), and oil-based yellow (from annatto seed). Be aware that TKB Trading has a minimum for orders. Cranberry Lane offers Ratanjot (purple) and Annatto Seeds (yellow). Sun Feather offers powdered natural pigments, which are made of pulverized minerals and plant material. Their offerings include: yellowish-brown (brown ochre), bright white (titanium dioxide), purple (ultramarine purple), earthy green (chromium oxide), earthy yellow (yellow ochre), bright blue (ultramarine blue), and earthy yellow (yellow sienna).

Furthermore, most all color in soap will fade over time. Ironically, reds are known for bleeding. Mineral pigments (and micas) are more likely to fade in the light than others. Do not use things that are not made for soaps, cosmetics, or food, such as crayons, candle dyes, or paint.

Benefits of Using Natural Handmade Soaps With Aloe Butter

!±8± Benefits of Using Natural Handmade Soaps With Aloe Butter

One of the benefits of using natural handmade soaps with aloe butter to wash your entire body is that your skin will completely absorb the moisture from the aloe. After you use soap with aloe, your skin will be rejuvenated. Most synthetic soap products contain ingredients that will rinse off your skin. This means that if you use these products every day, you are not properly moisturizing your skin. Your skin should to be moisturized on a daily basis. When you lather with soap that is made from aloe, your will instantly feel softer. After you step out of the shower, your skin will feel like silk.

Dry skin that is exposed to the wind and sun should be cleansed with natural handmade soaps with aloe. Aloe will soothe your skin and make it very soft. Your skin will not show signs of redness or irritation when you cleanse it using natural handmade soaps with aloe because aloe is an organic ingredient. Most people with dry or sensitive skin are unable to use regular soap because it will cause their skin to have an allergic reaction. Aloe is very gentle on your skin and will not dry it.

Using natural handmade soaps with aloe butter will help your skin look younger. Because your skin is able to absorb all of the moisture from the aloe, you will look revived. Your pores will be smaller and your skin will glow. Any fine lines will look smoother, resulting in a more youthful appearance. After just a few days of using soap with aloe in it, you will notice a dramatic difference in the way your skin feels. Aloe will calm your skin and give your complexion a vibrant tone. Taking care of your skin by using natural handmade soaps with aloe will help your skin look and feel its best.
